err, ok, I don't know what vide you're talking about... but...

Well in this post I'm talking about the SSL mix buss compressor from Native Instruments.... so not a DAW stock compressor...

So.. the way I look at mix buss compressors.. is you put them on part way through the mix process.. and your mixing decisions are based on what that compressor is doing to the mix.. so if all your mix choices are done in this way.. it seems like madness to send it to a mix engineer without that compressor on.. unless you were really over compressing it..

I think usually the idea is to compress it lightly.. and so that the compression you put in other places is lighter.. and that idea of it gluing things together a bit more..

Any who.. I think it must be regarded as a valid technique.

Wether to put one on early or latter.. and how much it matters if it colors the sound.. well.. with any luck, you start a mix with some kind of a vision for where it's to go, and if that vision suggests a colored mix buss compressor.. why not?

It's true.. if you're just learning to mix.. and you don't really know what your doing.. there's lot of room to destroy things with mix buss compression... on the other hands.. there's lots of ways to destroy things anyway.. I guess my feeling is that when starting out you really want to give your self the most latitude for exploring, and experimenting.. and not be too out come orientated other then the outcome of learning something along the way.

Ok.. lets see, what would I say after that?

Oh, I'm really still pretty new to mix buss compression.. I actually often steal the settings from other mix engineers.. in my Waves Renaissance Compressor I have a preset from Charles Dye.. as an example..

In any event.. right now is still a period where I'm somewhat early in learning my way around the subject.. and maybe what compressors from my library might be right for it.. and what the implication of one or another compressor might be, and blah blah blah

Err, and who's Bill? You have me half wondering if you're a spam bot.. but it seems a worth while enough thing to talk about anyway.. so.....

I agree with Bill never always anynhitg . Have a good reason to put any piece of gear (or plugin) anywhere in your signal chain.I think an important omission in this video has to do with your video #1 gain staging. If you are working with a buss compressor from day 1, it might be a little too easy to start sending too much level to the mix buss and not realize it since your buss compressor is squashing it down! I generally check mixes with some buss compression (as it will ultimately wind up with at mastering), but I try not to make any big moves (particularly equalization) while it is engaged. I find that I can put together a coherent mix *faster* if using buss compression at mix-time, but I make *better* mixes without. Even the most transparent compressors (and most stock DAW comps are anynhitg but) impart some amount of sonic coloration, and you are shooting yourself in the foot by coloring your whole mix before you start mixing.A good tip would be to periodically bypass your buss compressor and make sure you aren't hitting the mix buss too hard, and make sure you are still peaking in that good -10dBFS range without the compressor. But much of this is dependent upon your gear and your level of expertise. Unless you are a grizzled veteran and have something better than a stock plugin to put on your mix buss, I feel like buss compression early in the mix process can hurt more than it helps and it can compensate for mix errors that you would hear more clearly without anynhitg on the mix buss. (and realize that the first thing your mastering engineer might ask you to do is take anynhitg off the mix buss before sending the pre-masters again, unless you are a veteran and have some awesome gear & ears, s/he can do it much better than you can.)Lastly, I would much rather my mastering engineer not be limited (pun intended) his Fairman (or Manley or Elysia or Chandler ..) sure sounds a lot better than any DAW plugin for doing that first stage of mastering compression.
